I Intriguing
H Helpful, hopeful
C Challenging, Calming (at times)
P Perplexing
L Laudable
A trip with many twists and turns, starts and stops, gasps of delight and surprise.
Hopefully I will use many of the things that I learned.
If not, education is ALWAYS a GREAT thing.
Hats off to the persons responsible for allowing us the opportunity to learn and grow.

Week 9: #22 Downloadable Media
Some sites offer audiobook downloading for free, like LibriVox. Other sites, like Wowio, offer free e-books. Take a look at these sites and compare them to what is offered by the library.
Checked out Wowio ... how cool is that. But, I am still of the opinion that I like real books.
Liked the look of the website ... it does "WOW" one's eyes. Saw a few things that looked choice.

Week 9: #21 Podcasts, Smodcasts!
Word of the Year for 2005? Also on the list was Suduko and squick. History of the podcast was, in a word, boring , but read it anyway. Too techie for me.
Checked out the podcast directories. I looked at yahoo first and saw 99 cents next to anything I was interested in. Nope.
Movin' on to Podcast.net. Saw some Christmas podcasts that looked interesting so I installed an RSS feed to one of those. Got sidetracked to Jinglegram.com
Back on track now and on to the next exercise ... downloadable media!

Week 9: #20 Discover YouTube and other video sharing sites
This caused quite a commotion for my home town Other than union strikes, I can't recall an issue emotional enough to cause this kind of ruckus ....
Kinda proud of those kids for standing up for Ketchup and All It Stands For.

I haven't figured out the imbedded video part yet. A staff member suggested a video bar and that was something I had yet to add. So I did learn something today.
I know where the link on youtube is for embedded videos / just don't know where to paste it yet.
I guess I will wait until Monday and pick some brains for the rest of it.

Please check my bling.
I have rechecked my blog and homework. I have added a book to the hcpl wiki and my blogger site to the wiki.
Please, please, Powers That Be,
Be so very nice to me.
I want my bling,
this is not a fling.
I have ran out of things that rhyme
and I have no more time.
thanks ever so much ....

I have posted a book and my blog to the hcpl wiki.

Week 7: #17 Blog About Technology
I would love to blog MORE about technology. Being part-time, I don't have a lot of available work time to do explore more and grasp the concepts better.
When I attempt to work on this at home, my computer promptly freezes up and just as promptly kicks my off.
When this happens, I think, "this is technology? We have all these applications at hand but the computers between work and home are twitchy? What's that all about?"
So, on one hand I am lucky enough to be learning all these new, cool things. On the other hand, with all the improvements, just a bit of incompatibility will stifle your efforts to learn the new stuff.
To sum up, I am sailing down the super highway with a low tire, swerving all over the road.
H-m-m-m. But we always get back into the car no matter what the problem.

Week 8: #19 Web-based Apps: They're not just for desktops
Zoho writer. I can see where this would be a useful tool, as long as you want to take the time to learn it and use it.
Right now, I am on tech-overload.

Week 7: #16 So what's in a wiki?
Playing catchup here ... since my last post, we have lost power at ATA for 36 hours, survived The Great Horizon Outrage of 2007 and I welcomed a new grandson. Whew - back to business...
Surprised to learn that wiki's have been around since '98. Thought Wikipedia was the One True Original. When I discovered this web site, I thought it was amazing. What an idea that just anybody could be involved in this.
I like the Book Lover's Wiki from Princeton even tho there aren't many reviews.
The ALA wiki would be very useful for those participating. All the info you need right there with easy access for additional information and/or corrections.

Well, I like this. Was able to play with a bit here at work but will do more at home to better hone my skills.
I knew this existed but never ventured there. Thanks for bringing this to our attention ...

Wk 5 Part 3 Post 3 LIBRARY THING & KEN SPAULDING
Ken Spalding is the creator of Library Thing and once again, when I click on my link, I retrieve his catalogue.
So, I made mention of this at work and Iwannabealibrarian jumped right on it.
Apparently, the directions we we received from On High (no disrepect intended) were not 100% correct.
In order to link to OUR catalogue, we need to log in, go to our profile and find the link for our specific catalogue.
So, now we all need try again.

Library thing - somebody is messing with me.
I just went to library thing, clicked "home", entered my id and password.
Went back to blogger and did the "click" that previously took me to Ken's books.
(See, we are are a first name basis already! That was quick).
NOW, the danged thing goes to MY books. And all I did was log in.
Too weird.

Library thing boo-boo
When I created the earlier post, my library appeared, as it should.
Now, the list of Tim Spalding's is popping up.
Who IS Tim Spalding?
He has read WAY more books than I have!
I am going to leave the original post up and create a new one and try again
and see what happens.
I am thinking .... conspiracy.

Very close to my home town ....
This is a local product. A kind of tangy ketchup with a bit of a bite, it contains horseradish.
http://www.catsupbottle.com/
The area in which I used to live is considered (hang on to your hat ...)
The Horseradish Capital of the World.
http://www.globalgourmet.com/food/egg/egg1296/horscap.html
now you know one more thing about me.

Week 4 #9 Finding feeds
Found several feeds in the San Francisco Chronicle. Have added a friend and plan to add some more.
Being gone week before last, I am playing catch-up and clean up today so I can start on week 5.

RSS Feeds Exercise
OK, found one aspect of this confusing .... we have a blog on blogspot BUT have to go to BLOGGER for our rss feeds. A friend here, more knowledgeable than I with all this, has added a button to her BLOG so she can read everything from one spot.
She has promised to show me how to do it but I am going to try to figure it out on my own but wanted to add this post to fulfil my rss portion of this week's assignment.
Between my assigned duties and trying to find an unoccupied computer in the workroom, I get to work on all of this in bits and pieces. This is frustrating. Maybe I will have to resort to using a laptop (boo-hiss ... don't like that keyboard).
Off for check-in duty ...

Safety on the 'net - week 2, post 1
I do everything right.
I have disabled cookies for passwords, choosing to type in my password
EACH and EVERY time.
I use different passwords for different accounts.
I DON'T use mmn, home address, year of birth.
I frequently change passwords.
I do not save passwords in a word doc on my computer.
I write them down the old-fashioned way using pen and paper.
Had my checking account compromised Thanksgiving weekend, cutting short my plans to shop.
Someone else had fun shopping on my dime, buying electronics and high-end purses.
Numerous trips and/or phone calls to bank. Still don't know how it happened.
The bank adamantly denied that something on their end might have caused this.
Realized after this experience, that I know more about internet safety than my bank does.
This frightens me.

San Francisco
Week 3 - post 1
I was in San Fran last week --- what a glorious place to visit. Way too expensive to live there, I am afraid. Took a look in the classifieds of places to buy or rent.
HOLY COW!
Discovered I like the San Fran newspaper, The Journal". Planning on using something from there for the RSS feed.
I took 301 pictures --- love those digi cams! Just shoot everything in sight and then delete what is less than perfect. I haven't started the delete process however. Not enough time.
But I am planning on using some of the pictures for the week 3 exercise so stay tuned!
Thinking of work even while gone. Yikes!
